The whole show builds toward one moment: CM Punk defends the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens, who’s fighting for the title in his home country. Owens returned at SummerSlam after 17 months on the shelf, hitting a Stunner on his close friend Sami Zayn to win a Fatal Four-Way over Zayn, Gunther, and Finn Balor and punch his ticket to tonight’s main event. In the weeks since, Punk and Owens have traded increasingly personal shots on the mic, dredging up old history from their independent wrestling days together. For Owens, a world title has been out of reach for nearly a decade — doing it in Toronto would be the moment of his career. For Punk, it’s another test of whether he can back up the “Best in the World” talk against a longtime rival. With Sami Zayn’s loyalties clearly frayed after being used as Owens’ stepping stone, don’t be shocked if he factors into how this one plays out.

Elsewhere on the card, Blake Monroe finally makes her long-awaited main roster in-ring debut against Giulia, who called her out and pushed GM Nick Aldis to make the match after weeks of confrontation. Expect WWE to use the spot to establish Monroe as a legitimate physical threat right out of the gate.

The Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton situation also continues to simmer following SummerSlam, with a full match between the two already on the books for WWE’s brand-new Sunday Night’s Main Event special on September 6 in Atlanta — so tonight is likely to bring more tension and mind games than an actual in-ring showdown.

Rounding out the night, Oba Femi is advertised to appear fresh off his SummerSlam victory over Brock Lesnar, and names like Tiffany Stratton, Gunther, and Jade Cargill are all listed as featured for the show, hinting at continued movement in the title pictures and midcard storylines.

Whatever happens with the Undisputed Championship tonight will shape the road to Sunday Night’s Main Event on September 6 and to Money in the Bank on October 10 in New Orleans.
